Meg's Story...Press Clippings
Huntsville Times, The (AL) May 9, 2008 STEVE CAMPBELL Times Staff Writer Proceeds go to help student begin career in nursing At a time when brain cancer was slowly taking her life, Meg Ingram gained a special appreciation for nurses who help people like her every day. In fact, the University of Alabama student and cheerleader from Huntsville liked her nurse so much, she switched her major from business to nursing. Meg lost her battle with cancer in February, but her name lives on in a scholarship for an aspiring nurse. About 175 golfers played Thursday in the inaugural Meg Ingram Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament at the Hampton Cove Golf Course. HJ Ingram, Meg's mother, said Meg wanted to be the nurse she had during her cancer treatments. With the new scholarship, others can. "Good nurses make a tremendous difference in the lives of their patients," Ingram said. "(Meg) would be excited to help other students achieve their goals. "I think she'd be proud that people care enough to give back (through) the scholarship in her name." The scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior from Madison County. The recipient must have at least a 3.8 grade point average in high school and major in nursing at Alabama. The graduate of Huntsville High School died about a year and a half after she was diagnosed with the illness. For months during chemotherapy, Meg continued to cheer and maintain a 4.0 GPA. She stayed active with her sorority, helping raise money for children with cancer to attend summer camp. In January, Meg and her father went to Tuscaloosa to watch her former teammates practice their cheer routine to be performed in national competition. "She taught us that you can experience joy in life even in the face of something as scary as cancer," HJ Ingram said. "She made the choice to make an impact every day and she never stopped doing that." Copyright, 2008, The Huntsville Times. All Rights Reserved.
